Merzmensch – Breakfast Shot
A moment between two sips and a surveillance.
In Breakfast Shot, Merzmensch captures a cinematic tension that initially appears as a random café scene. A young woman stands behind her camera at a neatly set breakfast table—teacups, saucers, and a still-warm silver teapot. But her gaze isn't directed at the table. It's directed outside, toward a narrow alleyway teeming with a blurry crowd of people, their backs turned to her, oblivious to her—or without showing any interest in her.
The image walks a fine line between nostalgia and unease. Shot in crisp black and white, it recalls mid-century photography, but details subtly betray its staging. The composition is precise, the atmosphere dense and full of invisible narratives. Who is the observer? And who is being observed?
As always in the HalluciNation series, Merzmensch takes us into a dream logic in which memories are staged and reality is carefully misremembered.
